To the Ends of the World
Thordak has fallen – though the price paid was steep. In the aftermath, Raishan absconds with Thordak’s corpse. Vox Machina doesn’t know her plan, but it can’t be good. Fractured, they scatter on their own personal quests: vengeance, solace and knowledge.
The opening scene being a continuation of the end of the last episode is good and solidifies that the fight is far from over for Vox Machina in this episode. It also rushes a lot of the action and emotion of the story. The other highlight of this moment is how it pays off every moment Keyleth has been disregarded and ignored for her justified mistrust of Raishan. Marisha Ray gives a powerful performance in this scene as she lays out what’s she faced when trying to use her voice and it ends with her showing a determination of will that I was waiting for.
With Keyleth gone, the team returns to their keep to deal with the aftermath of the battle and while Pike and Grog care for the injured and comatose Scanlan, more fractures appear as Vex confronts Vax about more unfinished business that they decide to see to without the rest of the team. Pike still has some great moments of personal doubt and Grog continues to deliver the comedy among all the tension.
Keyleth returns home to her people and confronts her father after learning about a way to track Raishan while the twins travel to Stilben to hunt Anna Ripley. As the twins investigate, Kayleth makes her stand by giving an impassioned speech that will force the council to allow her to complete the final rights of her Aramente. I really love the contrasting moments between Vex’s impatient hunt and the risks it brings with Kayleth’s focus on her trials. Both deliver beautiful visual moments both for Keyleth and the action of the twin’s fight on the dock.
The tenth episode is filled with great action and visual thrills throughout. The animation team outdid themselves with the look of this episode and the cast does amazing work bringing out the emotion of every moment. That being said, the episode at times does feel rushed. I was expecting more from the interpersonal conflicts and most of the time I felt like I was watching the rest of the previous episode rather than a new one. The episode does end on a great cliffhanger for the twins which means I am immediately on board with what comes next.
